Room Tips

Plan the Capitol Complex visit carefully. Tours run at fixed times from the tourist centre, groups are limited and identity documents are checked at entry. Photography is restricted in parts of the complex. Combining it with the Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake, which are close together, makes one comfortable sightseeing day.

Go to Sukhna Lake early in the morning or at sunset. Midday in summer is extremely hot, while the promenade at dawn is cool and quiet. The Rock Garden opens in the morning and is best visited before the crowds of school groups arrive.

About food: try the hotel restaurant at least once, since guests consistently praise it, then go to Pal Dhaba in Sector 28 for a classic Punjabi dinner. Lassi, butter chicken and fresh tandoori roti are the basics. Portions are generous, so order less than you think.

Ask about wedding functions when booking between November and February. The banquet halls are popular, and a quiet room away from the celebrations matters if you need to rest before an early flight or meeting.

Respect traffic rules strictly if driving. Chandigarh police use cameras and electronic fines for seatbelts, lane discipline, speed and red lights, and enforcement is much stricter than in neighbouring Punjab or Haryana. Helmets are mandatory on two wheelers.

Check out is at noon. For guests continuing to Shimla by the toy train, the Kalka departures leave early in the morning, so it is better to settle the bill the evening before and arrange a taxi to Kalka with reception, since the drive takes around forty minutes before dawn and trains do not wait.
